  • Associated with Mother Earth and the birth-death-rebirth cycle
  • Should not contain conductive materials such as iron or steel since they could interfere with the energies of ritual tools of the same material.
  • In some cases, an altar isn’t permanent, but erected during ceremonies.
  • Some altar items can include: an athame (a black-handled knife), a white-handled knife, a sword, a wand, candles, a cup or goblet, anointing oils, dishes for salt and water, a necklace with beginning or end, a censer, bells, scourges, dishes for offering food and drink, images or depictions of deities. (This list isn’t exhaustive and all items on it are not requirements for a “real” altar. Altar size, placement, permanence, and objects on it vary greatly depending on the person.)
  • If a broom or cauldron are needed during rituals, they’re placed on either side of the altar.
